Bids for Brains 2008 tickets available now!

It's time again for Bids for Brains, our fundraiser for scholarships and programming. To reserve your seat for this dinner and live and silent auction, go to http://www.ukalumni.net and enter keyword "bids."

Bids for Brains 2008 is on Friday, Oct. 10, starting at 6:30 p.m. at Fasig-Tipton Kentucky. Seats are $75 each ($50 of which is tax-deductible). It's a great evening of food, fun and support for the terrific students in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications.

Kernel Wins Big at KPA

The Kentucky Kernel was named the best college & university newspaper in Kentucky for the fourth straight year, winning the 2007 General Excellence award in the Kentucky Press Association's annual competition.

Kernel staff members received first place honors in 15 of 26 categories, 10 second place awards, eight third place awards, and one certificate of merit. The Kernel swept the Best Spot News Coverage category.

Hall of Fame and Creason Lecture on April 1

The annual Joe Creason Lecture in Journalism and the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame luncheon will take place on Tuesday, April 1.

The Hall of Fame Luncheon begins at noon at the Radisson Plaza Hotel in Lexington. Reservations are required; go to http://www.ukalumni.net/ and enter keyword KJHF to register and pay with a credit card. (The 2008 induction class will be announced in the next few weeks.)

The 2008 Joe Creason Lecture will be given by John Carroll. Carroll is the former editor of the Los Angeles Times. The lecture is in UK's Memorial Hall beginning at 6 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Hearst Photojournalism Competition Top 20

Congratulations to Elliott Hess and Britney McIntosh! Elliott tied for sixteenth place and Britney tied for eighteenth place in the first round of the Hearst Photojournalism Competition. Sixty-seven students from 41 universities competed in this round. Thanks to Elliott and Britney’s strong showing, UK is currently ranked 8th in photojournalism overall.

JOU senior named Collegiate Reporter of the Year

Sean Rose, a senior at the University of Kentucky and managing editor
of the Kentucky Kernel, UK’s student newspaper, has won the national
collegiate Reporter of the Year Award from the Associated Collegiate
Press.

Several other UK students also won national awards at the
organization’s national meeting in Washington, D.C., this weekend:
Chris DeLotell, a journalism and education senior from Mason, Ohio,
won third place for Sports Story of the Year; Keith Smiley, a
journalism and computer science senior from Versailles, won honorable
mention for News Photo of the Year; Brad Luttrell, a journalism
senior from Middlesboro, won honorable mention for Picture Story of
the Year. Rose also placed third in News Story of the Year.

Rose’s Reporter of the Year entry consisted of stories about the
crash of Comair Flight 5191, the drowning of two women during a storm
in Lexington and a profile of former UK interim police chief Kevin
Franklin.

Entries in the Reporter of the Year competition consisted of a
reporter's three best single news or feature stories published in a
college newspaper during the competition year. There are separate
categories for two-year and four-year schools. Rose received $1,000
for his winning entry. The four-year competition is co-sponsored by
KRT Campus. Entries in the other categories consisted of single
stories, pictures or picture stories.

Rose, a journalism major from Crestwood, is a 2004 graduate of Oldham
County High School. He has interned at the Lexington Herald-Leader
and LEO, an alternative weekly newspaper in Louisville.

The Associated Collegiate Press is the collegiate division of the
National Scholastic Press Association. It is based and incorporated
in Minnesota as a non-profit educational association and provides
journalism education services to students, teachers, media advisers
and others throughout the United States and in other countries.

James C. Bowling Lecture

Kenneth Sternad, Vice President for Public Relations for United Parcel Service, will give the 9th annual James C. Bowling lecture on Thursday, October 25. Mr. Sternad's lecture, "The Power of the Pulpit: Using Executive Communication to Build Brand Image," will begin at 6 p.m. in the W.T. Young Library Auditorium on the UK campus.

The James C. Bowling Executive in Residence program honors the memory of Mr. Bowling, a Kentucky native who built an outstanding career in public relations. The series brings a prominent public relations executive to campus to meet with students, faculty and staff and present a public lecture.

As part of this year's events, Dr. Jay Rayburn of Florida State University will receive the Excellence in Public Relations award. ISC senior Lori Reifert will receive the Bowling Scholarship.
