Elliott tied for sixteenth place and Britney tied for eighteenth place in the first round of the Hearst Photojournalism Competition.  Sixty-seven students from 41 universities competed in this round. Rose also placed third in News Story of the Year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rose’s Reporter of the Year entry consisted of stories about the&lt;br /&gt;crash of Comair Flight 5191, the drowning of two women during a storm&lt;br /&gt;in Lexington and a profile of former UK interim police chief Kevin&lt;br /&gt;Franklin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Entries in the Reporter of the Year competition consisted of a&lt;br /&gt;reporter's three best single news or feature stories published in a&lt;br /&gt;college newspaper during the competition year. There are separate&lt;br /&gt;categories for two-year and four-year schools. Rose received $1,000&lt;br /&gt;for his winning entry. The four-year competition is co-sponsored by&lt;br /&gt;KRT Campus. Entries in the other categories consisted of single&lt;br /&gt;stories, pictures or picture stories.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rose, a journalism major from Crestwood, is a 2004 graduate of Oldham&lt;br /&gt;County High School. He has interned at the Lexington Herald-Leader&lt;br /&gt;and LEO, an alternative weekly newspaper in Louisville.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Associated Collegiate Press is the collegiate division of the&lt;br /&gt;National Scholastic Press Association. Mr. Sternad's lecture, "The Power of the Pulpit: Using Executive Communication to Build Brand Image," will begin at 6 p.m. in the W.T. Young Library Auditorium on the UK campus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The James C. Bowling Executive in Residence program honors the memory of Mr. Bowling, a Kentucky native who built an outstanding career in public relations. The finals were held in San Francisco June 4-10.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Boehnke will receive a $3,000 scholarship for her achievement. The program consists of yearlong competitions in print and broadcast journalism and photojournalism.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;UK finished ahead of schools such as Northwestern University, Syracuse University and Western Kentucky University.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Four UK students, all of whom worked for the Kentucky Kernel, the university's independent daily student newspaper, placed in the top 20 for their work in the writing categories of editorial, sports and spot news.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the editorial competition, Megan Boehnke, a senior from Crestwood, Ky., took first, while Andrew Martin, a 2006 graduate from Henderson, Ky., finished in 13th place. Chris DeLotell, a junior from Mason, Ohio, finished seventh in personality/ profile and 17th in sports. Sean Rose, a junior from Crestwood, Ky., finished fourth in spot news.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"It's been a good year for the Kernel," said Chris Poore, student publications director at UK. "We won the Pacemaker Award earlier this year, which recognizes the entire newspaper. This contest awards individuals and it celebrates good writing. He will receive a $750 scholarship, and the UK School of Journalism will receive a matching grant.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rose, the news editor at the Kernel, competed against 75 students from 48 universities in the spot news category. Chris was recognized for his profile of UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With Chris' win and earlier wins by other UK Journalism students, the School of Journalism and Telecommunications is ranked 5th in the nation in news writing.  One competition remains in this year's program, the Spot News contest.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Hearst Awards program is open to journalism students in programs accredited by ACEJMC; there are currently 109 accredited programs. Young Library Auditorium, UK Campus&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Scripps Howard First Amendment Center, The Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues, the UK chapter of the Society for Professional Journalists, and the School of Journalism and Telecommunications are sponsoring a public forum involving five of the six candidates for Kentucky Attorney General.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Both Democratic candidates, Robert Bullock and Jack Conway, have agreed to participate.  Republican candidates Tim Coleman, Philip Kimball and Jon Larson also have agreed to attend.  Republican Stan Lee declined to attend, citing a schedule conflict. Keith is currently the Kernel's managing editor and was previously the Kernel photo editor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Caitlin Condo, an Integrated Strategic Communication major, will be the Advertising Manager.  Caitlin is currently an advertising account executive for the Kernel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Carrie Knoll, a Journalism major, will be the Summer Kernel Editor-in-Chief. She was previously the executive director of KET.  She serves on the School of Journalism and Telecommunications Professional Advisory Board.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Clooney distinguished himself as a journalist in both the broadcast and print areas.  He is currently the host of "Moments That Changed Us" on the AmericanLife TV network.  The program "presents an in-depth interview with a leading figure in a signature moment that changed our lives, our culture and our history" (&lt;a href="http://www.goodtv.com/programs.php?programid=MO"&gt;http://www.goodtv.com/programs.php?programid=MO&lt;/a&gt;).  Interview subjects have included Walter Cronkite, John Glenn, and Diahann Carroll.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Clooney has spoken to UK journalism students several times, most recently last fall when he presented "In Search of Darfur," a recounting of the trip he and his son, actor/director/writer George Clooney, made to Africa in Spring 2005. Megan will have the opportunity to compete in the Hearst National Writing Championship in San Francisco in June 2007.
